Recipes from the Garden of Mary

My first collaboration with a Greek publisher.

This book differs from other guidebooks about Holy Mount Athos on the Chalkidiki peninsula. My goal was to prove that women can also learn and write about the monk republic. Though Mount Athos has been a restricted area for women for more than 1000 years, the positive comments about my book show that I have succeeded in my goal.
For this project, I moved from my home town in Cologne, Gemany, to the foot of Mount Athos for 10 years. There I started to gather stories and recipes about the monk republic.
The cover of my book may irritate you: It's not only a book about how monks cook, but it is also about the history and treasures of this mysterious life and landscape.

The idea to sample recipes was only the first step to open the door to this forbidden world. Very soon I realized this was not enough. I wanted to write a practical book, easy for everybody to read. Even for people who have never heard anything about the monk republic. It also had to be a book that was not only dedicated to the Greek Orthodox religion, but also to everyone who views this unique place as a spiritual retreat. Anyone who is interested in learning about Mount Athos can find useful information about the daily life of the Orthodox monks and their rituals. The historical information in my book will complete the impression about what Mount Athos represents in this world.
